The song ‘Heart on my sleeve’ has been deleted from Youtube, TikTok and Spotify due to ‘infringing content created with generative AI’.

After a song with AI-generated vocals that falsely claimed to be from Drake and The weeknd went viral over the weekend, Universal Music Group (UMG) has taken it down from streaming services.

• ‘Heart on my sleeve’ song was denounced by the record company for ‘infringing content created with generative AI.”

• The song ‘Heart on my sleeve’ was initially posted to streaming sites under the artist name ‘Ghostwriter’ and then shared on TikTok by a person going by the identity ‘Ghostwriter977’.

• The song received 600,000 Spotify streams, 15 million TikTok views, and 275,000 Youtube views.

• This song was taken down yesterday afternoon, April 17, US time.

• According to UMG, the viral posts “demonstrate why platforms have a fundamental legal and ethical responsibility to prevent the use of their services ways that harm artists”.

• UMG declined to say whether it had formally requested takedowns from social media platforms and streaming services to remove content.

• UMG explained that the training of generative AI using our artists’ music as well as the availability of infringing content created with generative AI on DSPs (Digital service providers), begs the question of which side of history all stake holders in the music ecosystem want to be on: the side of deep fakes, fraud and denying artists their duplication rights? A spokesperson mentioned that we are encouraged by the engagement of one platform partners on these issues – they must be part of the solution.

• The Financial Times quoted UMG as saying last week that it had been trained on copyrighted music ‘without obtaining the required consents’.

• It also warned the platforms: “We will not hesitate to take steps to protest our rights and those of our artists.”

• The perceived threat of fraudulent tunes is motivating the music business to mobilise.

• The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) issues warning regarding this matter.

• They say that businesses were routinely infringing on copyrights by utilising music to train their machines.

• That use is unauthorised and violates the members’ rights by making unauthorised copies of the member’s works.

• The entertainment Industry released a list of seven guiding principles last month about the interaction between AI and music, emphasising the necessity for AI to “empower human expression” and the need of “creators’ interests … in policymaking”.

• Drake has encountered an AI-generated song twice this week.

• On Friday, he addressed a rendition of the song Munch by rising US rapper Ice Spice that included a fictions verse from him. He stated in an Instagram story, “this is the final straw AI”. Rapper and composer Bryson Tiller recently added an AI version of his voice to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s songs WAP and Don’t.
